Skype based programme, BookTalks connects students and teachers with authors in real time. This CORE Education initiative is gaining momentum and recent teacher network meetings are helping to extend the programme's popularity.
BookTalks Project Manager, Elizabeth Craker, this week has been presenting and demonstrating the concept to groups of teachers, including an online discussion with well known writer, Fleur Beale, author of more than 30 books for children.
“The teachers chatted with Fleur, and were very positive about their experience, and could see the potential of it for engaging their students.”
Through BookTalks, audiences of all ages can share a conversation with the author or illustrator (and even watch them draw!) using the free online software Skype. All you need is a broadband connection, a microphone, a webcam and Skype downloaded to your computer. Schools, or interested organisations, can search the database of more than 45 writers and illustrators.

Teachers at Silverstream School engage online through the BookTalks website with author Fleur Beale via free software.
