Students learning technologyThe young—our digital natives, are the obvious inspiration when looking at advancements in technology. Later this month this natural ability, knowledge and experience will bring hundreds to Wellington for the annual student-led Tech Hui.

The day-long event on June 24, at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is made possible through sponsorship. This year, CORE Education is proud to be one of the sponsors supporting the UPT Digital team from Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti School. A group of 13 students, aged 12 to 17 years, are presenting at the event.

The aim of Tech Hui is to provide senior students with information, ideas and opportunities about technology, and hear from speakers who are renowned in their fields of work. As a student-run conference it offers an innovative perspective on technology that other students can relate to, without being a 'geek-fest'.

UPT Digital is a games and software development class at Christchurch-based Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti high school. During the 30 minute presentation, the team will showcase the school, explain their learning process, and demonstrate their work.

UPT Digital Project Developer, Renea Mackie says the aim of the programme is to provide students with experience and knowledge to make informed choices about their tertiary study path, and to prepare them for a real-world work environment. So, when in Wellington, the students will be meeting with several corporate sponsors and programme supporters. “This teaches the students how to conduct themselves in a broad range of situations, and get an overall perspective of the industry.”

As a not-for-profit organisation, CORE Education’s charitable purpose is to advance education—supporting the young in ICT technology presents an exciting opportunity for the company. It is also a powerful experience for the students, with the potential to instigate many more exciting opportunities for them and their peers.
