History of CORE Education

A brief history of CORE Education.

Ultralab South (later CORE Education Ltd) opened in Manchester Street, Christchurch, New Zealand in March 2003. Its mission, which stands the test of time today, is “to push the boundaries of educational possibility”.

Modelled on Ultralab UK, the successful research and innovation unit at Anglia Ruskin University, the company emerged out of vision by its founders Nick Billowes, Derek Wenmoth and Dr Vince Ham.

Its inception was supported by business planning from Canterbury Development Corporation (who are the shareholder), a Heads of Agreement with Christchurch City Council, and a Memorandum of Understanding with Ultralab UK’s Director, Professor Stephen Heppell.

Ultralab South (CORE) was formed as a not-for-profit company, with charitable status reflecting the team’s belief in providing public good services for the educational sector in New Zealand.

In March 2005 Ultralab South changed its name to CORE Education Ltd.

In May 2007 CORE moved to its office on the 7th floor of Natcoll House, Christchurch.

In a twist of fate, Ultralab UK closed at the end of 2007, and senior staff from there have gone on to form CORE Education UK Ltd.

The two COREs regard one another as “sister companies” and staff from both teams work together on initiatives across the globe.
