CORE Achieve:

This year we launch CORE Achieve – an exciting professional learning programme led by CORE’s team of experienced and expert facilitators.

From February  regional workshops aimed at both early years and school leaders and teachers are being offered around New Zealand. Topics range from digital cybersafety, e-tools for assessment, digital literacies to self-review and developing local curriculum. On-site or cluster based workshops where CORE’s team works with a school or a cluster are tailored to meet the needs and interests of the professional learning group. All CORE’s workshops are focused on building capability and raising achievement. CORE is also offering long term transformative professional mentoring, which can be delivered both online and face-to-face. To register for a workshop … or contact the Achieve team: achieve@core-ed.org

Early Years

From Feb 1st 2010, CORE Education’s Early Years team is expanding to include a group of professional development facilitators from the University of Canterbury.

This new CORE Achieve Early Years team amalgamates a wealth of  experience and specialist expertise in facilitation and mentoring within the early childhood sector.

CORE Achieve Early Years can provide your service with professional learning opportunities in a range of curriculum, leadership and administrative areas. Our aim is to enhance outcomes for all children by supporting teachers and managers to achieve their goals and aspirations.

CORE Online:

The CORE Online team have a busy year ahead of them with two new projects to get under way and overseas appointments to keep:

Work continues with New Zealand Curriculum Online and Key Competencies Online – Christina Ward, Jane Nicholls, Elizabeth Craker and Megan Jensen are working on these projects during 2010.

A new section, Middle Schooling, will be launched on NZC Online in February.

CORE has won the contract to manage and develop the Software 4 Learning web site. Simon Evans from Hastings has been contracted to lead this project.

During March Christina Ward and Jane Nicholls will travel to the UK for professional development in digital story development and story production.

Christina will attend the ICTLT Conference in Singapore to present a paper that discusses the ways online environments (NZC Online and Key Competencies Online) have been developed to enable New Zealand’s schools and classrooms to share ideas and approaches across the country and the world.

EPDP – Otago:

First Seminar for EPDP in February:

The advisory committee of Nick Billowes, Mary-Anne Mills, and Don McLeod met recently to plan the first major seminar for 2010. This will be held in Dunedin on 17 February, and includes  work on the major trends emerging from the NZCER tool we've been using nationally, our own trends from the EPS tool, and a session on the BES on Leadership. There will also be the opportunity for individual participants to work on their own action plans for the year ahead.

Geoff Lane, the Ministry Coordinator for the whole programme nationally, was also at that meeting and updated us on what is happening nationally.

Following Vanessa’s breakfast seminar in Christchurch she will be speaking at our first Wellington breakfast for the year on 19 March.

The breakfast seminars in Hamilton will begin in March with quality speakers for educators across the Waikato region.

CORE Education will be running breakfast seminars in Christchurch and Wellington every two months during 2010. You will find more information about these seminars look on our Breakfasts page.

We are also looking at extending the breakfasts to other centres (such as Taupo and Dunedin), so keep an eye on the CORE website for more information. To be added to the CORE mailing list email krissie.clark@core-ed.net.

RSNZ Primary Science Teaching Fellows - Transforming Primary Science

In a move in an exciting new direction, CORE Education is working with the Royal Society of New Zealand - the premiere Science organisation in New Zealand - to provide curriculum support during 2010 and beyond to primary teachers involved in the Royal Society's Primary Fellows programme. The aim is to help teachers introduce quality science teaching in their schools.

The programme will involve up to 80 teachers during 2010. Each Fellow will be attached to a Science Based Organisation (SBO) for six months to learn about what it is to be a scientist. During this period, Fellows will attend three curriculum support workshops, facilitated by the CORE team. They will also take part in a Leadership Development programme at Otago University. In the year after the SBO internship, Fellows will be supported in introducing science into their programmes, and becoming science curriculum leaders in their schools, by visits and cluster meetings in their areas.

In addition to the face-to-face support, Fellows will become members of a dedicated online community of practice, in which they can support each other in becoming science leaders in their schools and communities.
