Innovation is in our DNA, and how to nurture this, particularly among Māori students, is central to the work that Janelle Riki-Waaka is passionate about.
She is interested in how we might unleash Māori student’s innovation powers, cultivate and nurture them, and then channel those natural gifts.
Her presentation will revolve around the concept that Māori students descend from greatness, and innovation is inherently a part of their DNA.
She believes if Māui is anything to go by, then surely our ‘Māui’ students are destined for great things. It is highly likely they’re already pushing boundaries, taking risks and coming up with creative solutions to problems and issues we are all faced with.
Janelle is a Consultant and Expert Partner at CORE Education. She is also the National Māori Medium lead in Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko, the National Digital Readiness Programme.
Janelle’s career is dedicated to improving teaching and learning programmes to enhance success for all Māori children, knowing that what works for them will also work for other students. She has considerable teaching and leadership experience in both English-medium and bilingual education settings, and a deep understanding of the ways teaching and learning programmes can be enhanced with the integration of digital technologies and hangarau matihiko.
Janelle has presented at CORE uLearn for the past eight years. She is always engaging, provocative and innovative. Her passion for improving outcomes for Māori students and their whānau is contagious, and her practical advice and guidance will ensure you feel supported on your journey.
