The Digital Opportunities Projects were joint partnerships between schools, the Ministry of Education and organisations involved in ICT. The aim is to support schools in the innovative use of information and communication technologies to provide and enhance learning opportunities for students. Below is a brief outline of some of the DigiOps Projects that CORE Education have evaluated.
Key findings:
- CHaOS Project - involved the use of portable tablet technology in a Wellington primary school. The goal was to investigate the efficacy of ‘tablet technology’ within an operational school environment. Pedagogical change was instigated and focused around guiding students towards taking greater ownership of their own learning.
- Digital Imaging in Special Education (DISE) Project – involved developing and trialling the use of individualised video resources for selected students whose learning is likely to be enhanced by the use of visual modelling. The goal was to investigate the usefulness of the technology to assist learning within a special needs environment.
- Forests of Life Project - involved SCION scientists and several schools in the development of a forest ecology teaching, learning and research programme. The focus was on developing teacher and student knowledge. Students used cutting-edge ICT devices for virtual communication.
- KOPU Project - the overall goals of the project were to investigate the effectiveness of establishing ICT rich learning environments, to change pedagogical approaches, to make better use of ICTs in teaching & learning and to develop an online community to share resources and teaching practices. The project involved a heavy ICT component and teachers utilised interactive whiteboards and wireless laptops as well as other digital technologies.
