DEANNE THOMAS and WHAREHOKA WANO, NZ - Keynote Abstract 

De and Whare

Deanne and Whare have had a long and diverse career in supporting Māori education in New Zealand, across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions and settings. They are well known in the Māori Medium sector, and in the wider Māori communities for their work in education, technology, te reo Māori, the arts, and school leadership and management.

Together they have published 7 sets of student and teacher materials to support Hangarau i Roto i te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

They have also designed and facilitated numerous professional learning programmes for teachers that include curriculum, assessment and planning for practice.

De and Whare, as they are usually referred to, are committed to improving learning success for Māori students and teachers through culturally-sound leadership, management, pedagogies and everyday practice.


FRANK GREEN, UK - Keynote Abstract 

Frank Green

Frank is Chief Executive of Leigh Academies Trust and is Executive Head of The Leigh Technology Academy, Longfield Academy, and the Wilmington Academy.

He has 18 years experience of leadership in two schools. The first was a new school, The Lincoln School of Science & Technology, which was also the first specialist school. The second, a City Technology College (CTC), became an Academy in 2007, and has recently moved into new buildings that reflect the new vision of the Academy: four schools in one academy, and large open learning areas.

The environments have been very rich in ICT and each school has been innovative and successful.

Since 2007 he has been Chief Executive of Leigh Academies Trust which has successfully helped two further schools to become Academies using the Leigh style. More academies are planned.

Frank has worked closely with the Specialist Schools Trust to promote and develop the specialist schools' programme, and the restructuring of secondary education, establishing the Vision 2020 group (now Futures Vision), as a leading, action think-tank. He has also published many articles on aspects of educational leadership and innovation, including the book, The Head Teacher in the 21st Century. He is an experienced trainer specialising in leadership, school improvement, and transformation.

Frank has a proven record of innovation and transformation as part of the school improvement process. The two schools he has led have both become leading schools in the country. Frank is a National Leader of Education, and The Leigh Technology Academy, a National Support School. He is also a founding director of the IAA (Independent Academies Association).


CHRISTIAN LONG, USA - Keynote Abstract    

Christian Long

Christian is an educator, designer, school planner, technology expert, educational futurist, and passionate advocate for innovative learning communities.  

Christian serves as Vice President for Cannon Design, supporting their K-12 and Higher Education practices, while also co-leading the firm’s The Third Teacher Plus platform.

Christian founded Be Playful, a collaborative global design agency focused on the intersection between school planning/design, emerging technology, professional development, and future trending.  Additionally, he is the founder/co-developer of Prototype Design Camp an innovative national design program for young creatives.

Christian speaks nationally and internationally on topics ranging from emerging trends in education, 21st century technology, and innovation in school planning/design. He is also  co-authoring a book with Chris Lehmann, founder of Philadelphia's Science Leadership Academy, with a focus on the design of ‘School 2.0’, due out in hardback in early 2012.

He currently co-leads the “Reimagine-ED” program and its national “Next Chapter” summit looking at the future of K-12 libraries. He also served on CEFPI's (Council for Educational Facility Planners International) World Conference 2010/San Jose (CA) planning team, the national CEFPI Innovation planning team, and the CEFPI Southern Region planning team.  

Additionally, he serves as an international juror for the global Design for Change program that empowers children to design solutions for the world’s greatest problems and previously served as a juror on the American Institute of Architects annual school architecture awards program.

Christian previously served as President/CEO of DesignShare, a global research and consulting practice dedicated to the school architecture/planning industry, and was the Director of Research for Learning Environments for Huckabee, a K-12 architecture firm in Texas.

Christian holds a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in school design, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he was also a member of Boston’s Codman Academy planning team serving under founder Meg Campbell. He received a bachelor’s degree in English and a certificate of secondary education from Indiana University (Bloomington), was a Klingenstein Summer Fellow for emerging school leaders at Teachers College, Columbia University, and participated in extended professional development at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Beyond his work in the school design industry, he spent 15 years as an educator, coach, program director, and experiential education leader in the US, as well as an educator in Tokyo, Japan and on the Navajo Reservation (New Mexico). He also authored and directed an innovative architecture, design, and planning program for urban high school students in Washington D.C. and was a volunteer educator at the National Building Museum. 

Christian is married to Karla - a middle school principal (and history teacher); they have 2 young children (Beckett, class of 2024, and Berkeley, class of 2027).  

He hopes to retire (many years from now) as a summer camp counselor.

KEVIN HONEYCUTT, USA - Keynote Abstract 

Kevin Honeycutt

Kevin Honeycutt has spent 20 years in education, the last eight have been at ESSDACK, a non-profit educational service agency, working in the area of staff development around 21st century skills. He has been managing the ArtSnacks network for nearly four years, and has used it to bring art understanding to thousands of people from all over the world.
