International Collaboration; City Life and Country Life

Kahutara School is a little more than an hours drive from the centre of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

The school is surrounded by farmland used for dairying, sheep and cattle, as well as a range of agricultural crops. This term there are 73 students at the school, and 4 teachers, covering years year 1 to 8. The students spend the day in their classroom with their teacher, and do not move from room to room for specialist subjects, unlike students in Singapore. They travel to the school from the surrounding countryside in school buses, and combine with other small schools in the district for sport and cultural events.

Student Reporters

The 4 student reporters can be seen talking about some aspects of their school and life in the country in these short video clips.

Reporters

The reporters introduce themselves and Poppy takes us on a short tour of the classrooms. She shows us the inside of her classroom, and the school library
Thomas shows us the playground, where we see a hill with trees for the children to climb, a large playing and the swimming pool. Thomas also gives us a quick look at the recycling area where school scraps are recycled for compost.
Keegan walks us around the grounds, showing us where sports are played. He tells us the children play rugby, netball, soccer, hockey and basketball, and then takes us to the BMX track constructed by parents and students of the school.
Maddie lives on a farm, and she takes us on a tour of the farm pointing out cows, sheep, pigs and of course horses. She then gives a demonstration of her riding skills.
