Professional Profile

Michael’s training is as a chemist/biochemist. He was involved in academic and industrial research—the latter in the pharmaceutical industry.

Michael trained in the secondary programme at Christchurch College of Education and taught in schools from Invercargill to Ruawai in Northland.  He returned to Christchurch as a lecturer at the college, where he became involved in evaluating the Digital Opportunities projects.

He joined CORE early in 2004. He has been involved in a wide variety of evaluation and other projects including online workplace learning with the Tertiary Accord of New Zealand, the Second Life in Education in New Zealand initiative, and work with the Pasifika and Muslim communities. Currently, Michael is part of the CORE team carrying out research into the impact of co-location of schools in Christchurch following the recent earthquakes.

Michael worked with the Ministry of Education's e-Learning Fellows groups from the beginning of this initiative until the Ministry's funding ended in 2009. Since then he has been a key player in CORE's eFellowship programme. The aim of this programme is to establish and foster an ongoing eLearning community of practical experience and expertise in New Zealand.

The other key project Michael is involved with is leading CORE's Curriculum Development and ongoing support for the Royal Society of New Zealand's Primary Science Teacher Fellowship programme. This programme is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and aims to help primary teachers become competent and confident teachers and leaders in science education.

Personal statement:

"I am interested in the whole systems way of looking at complex situations, and appreciate the insights gained from Soft Systems Methodology and similar holistic approaches. I have trained in Mind Mapping with Tony Buzan in London, and enjoy using and sharing this and similar techniques. I am also a trained counsellor and life coach. In my role as a science educator, I value practical approaches, including the use of data-logging technologies to gather real life data to enrich the learning experience."
