Wharehoka Wano
Whare is the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA) Team Leader and the Kaihautū Māori at CORE Education.
Whare took a two-year contract with CORE in 2009 facilitating Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA) with Māori Medium kura in the Taranaki-Whanganui region. He then stepped into the team leader role of the TMoA facilitators, and eventually into the Kaihautū Māori role, which oversees the Māori team across all CORE contracts.
While his initial training and teaching was in English, Social Studies, and PE, it has been in Māori Education that Whare has worked over the last 20 years. This has included the development of the Marautanga, providing professional leadership in Māori Immersion settings, writing and developing Māori language resources, and eventually DVDs.
As part of the CORE team, his role is in ensuring clear communication between the CORE team and the Māori team, and the wider CORE external stakeholders. His strengths are in facilitating, leading and ensuring team members are contributing in areas they have strengths. The cultural values of Māori leadership are important to Whare, and are modelled in the way he communicates and leads. He has chaired the Board at his Kura Kaupapa for four terms, as well as being involved in numerous other educational and iwi governance bodies where, again, his leadership is inclusive.

“Ko Taranaki, ko Te Atiawa ngā iwi, ko Kurahaupō ko Tokomaru ngā waka, ko Taranaki te maunga. Ko Ngāti Awa te iwi, ko Mataatua te waka, ko Putauaki te maunga.”
I completed a five-year secondary teaching programme, majoring in English and Māori at the Waikato University, where I was able to pursue an interest in both te reo Māori and waiata Māori. I taught at Whakatāne High School, and eventually took up a lecturing role for Waikato University before coming into the Advisory service in 1995. In 1999 I set up Tihi Ltd, which facilitated numerous education contracts over 11 years. Tihi Ltd became an award-winning education and event management company.
I have worked on the design and delivery of national and education programmes across a number of sectors for Māori student achievement. We were fortunate enough to manage and facilitate Whakapiki Te Reo contracts for six years that focused on teacher Māori language proficiency.
