Showcase Sessions

SHOWCASE SESSIONS

 Are very quick overviews of a new technology, skill, idea that presenters have used in their own professional life or with their students. There will be 8 presenters speaking for ten minutes each within the 90 minute breakout session. This keeps presentations concise, and the interest level up.

They are to be held in Breakout One in the Christ's College Old Boys Theatre. Covering a variety of topics they can be booked through the normal online booking method. Look for Showcase


1. Presenter:  Anton Pienaar
Title: IPod, iPod and off to learn I go
Abstract:

The use of innovative technologies in learning has become a much discussed and debated topic. Recently, the pervasive technology, namely iPod Touch was introduced into a social setting by the researcher and author. Unexpectedly, the positive attributes and value added learning possibilities became evident by using this technology. Collaborative, informal and intrinsically motivated learning started to occur spontaneously by using the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch opened a new world of learning in terms of: video; audio; interactivity; social networking and many more innovations. The presenter will demonstrate, describe and discuss this very attractive method of making learning occur unexpectedly.


Bio: Anton Pienaar is Resource Development Manager at e-Blended Learning Solutions (e-BLS) in New Plymouth. He has been involved internationally in the design and implementation of learning, teaching and assessment online. He holds an MA in Higher Education with a specialisation in E-learning in Higher Education and Learning Management Systems. He is a passionate teacher, having taught from high school level to post-graduate level. Anton has presented at several international conferences and is specifically researching the phenomenon of asynchronous communication online and its real influence on learning. e-Blended Learning Solutions develops educational resources for the Practical Education Institute (PEI), one of New Zealand's largest private tertiary establishments. Recently, e-BLS won a national Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) award for best training product of the year, using the design techniques and online learning model deployed at PEI.


2. Presenter: Henrietta Miller
Title: Twitter for Teachers in Ten Minutes
Abstract:

This session is aimed at teachers who may have heard about Twitter but are not currently using it. It will explore how Twitter has become the richest form of professional development available to teachers today. Links and examples will also be provided to directly illustrate how Twitter is transforming teacher's lives and classrooms.

Bio: Henrietta Miller is a stage 3 teacher at Roseville College a K-12 Anglican girl's school in Sydney. She is also the E-learning and IWB coordinator for the Junior School. She conducts weekly techie brekkies, during which she introduces and instructs other teachers in how to best integrate web 2.0 tools into their programs. http://www.classroomchronicles.net

3. Presenter: Lawrence Walker
Title: Making inclusive classrooms using assistive technology
Abstract:

What are some of the ICT tools that will enable learners to function reasonably independently in educational settings. These will be showcased and practical examples given.


Bio: Lawrence Walker has twenty years classroom teaching experience in rural and urban areas, at the primary and secondary level and ten years as a teacher educator. He specialises in ICT applications to improve learning including special needs and assistive technology.


4. Presenter: Ashley Blair
Title: NCEA students collaborating with Studyit
Abstract:

Studyit www.studyit.org.nz is a free, safe and successful online resource supporting NCEA students. Achievement standards have been repackaged with student input and there are thirteen forums where students can ask questions and discuss issues. Studyit employs expert teachers who respond to student questions on the forums in the weekends, at night and in the holidays. 8 pm on weekday nights is consistently the peak time during school terms. Studyit currently has students 29,000 registered. Ministry funded research found that, What is also unique about Studyit is that it encourages a participatory culture where participants believe that their contributions matter, and feel some degree of social connection with one another. Studyit is a community that provides strong incentives for active participation through a communal problem solving approach. (Trewern and Wenmoth, 2008, p41)


Bio: Ashley is responsible for the development and management of the Ministry of Education’s Studyit www.studyit.org.nz, an award winning online resource for NCEA maths, science and English students. He was the Principal of Cannons Creek School in Porirua East for 17 years and won a Churchill Fellowship in 2001 and was a K.A. North Scholar in 2002.

Abstract:

Using voicethread as a collaborative work sample and rich learning task. Example voicethreads shown which have been edited simultaneously by students in the UK and Australia.

6. Presenter: Anthony Oldmeadow
Title: Creating Online and Offline Digital Portfolios
Abstract:

At Laurimar Primary school, digital portfolios are used to present and communicate an individual's progress and achievements. Digital portfolios enable access to intellectual activity that was not practically possible without the use of ICT. Laurimar Primary School has effectively created offline digital portfolios using netbook for grades 1 and 2 students and provided all grade 3 to 6 students with their own online digital learning portfolio through wikispaces. The digital learning portfolio is used by the children to reflect focused learner-centred activities that involve designing, decision making, goal setting and scaffolded reflection. The portfolios are also used extensively during 3-way interviews. During this session we will see examples of the online and offline digital learning portfolios and discuss the impact the portfolios have on children's engagement and parent involvement.


Bio: Anthony Oldmeadow is an ICT coach working at both Laurimar Primary School and Diamond Creek East Primary School. Anthony has experience as an Ultranet Coach for the Northern Metropolitian Region of Victoria and is passionate about supporting the integration of ICT into school curriculums.


7. Presenter: Linda Whitehead & Lynn Davie
Title: Transformational Learning and Change Management
Abstract:

Transformational Learning requires transformational change. The Ultranet, a transformational e learning solution is being implemented this year across nearly 1600 P- 12 schools by the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and CSG, an Australian IT company. The DEECD and CSG have been innovative in designing and managing a significant change in the daily practices of the teachers, students and parents across the jurisdiction. This session will explore some of the innovative and successful practices that have been used at the Department, Region, Network and school level.


Bio: Linda Whitehead (CSG Education) has been involved with the DEECD Students @Centre and Ultranet project for approximately 5 years. She has been the project manager that lead the core group that set the vision and scope for the CSG Ultranet soltuion.


8. Presenter: Anthony Oldmeadow & Darryl Furze
Title: 10 things you should know about Making 1 to 1 Learning a Reality
Abstract:

In 2010, Laurimar Primary School launched a unique program not yet offered at any other school in the state which provided every child from grade 1 to 6 their own personalised interactive Netbook device to use at school and at home. The program was strongly supported by the parent community with a 100% uptake and 250 Netbooks rolled out across the school. Darryl Furze is the principal of Laurimar Primary and responsible for the launch of the schools 2010 1:1 netbook program. Anthony Oldmeadow is an ICT coach at Laurimar Primary and has supported the development of the program. Together they will take you through the 10 most important things they learnt about the 1:1 netbook journey and leave you with a list to get any school started in successfully make 1 to 1 learning a reality.
