Rachel started her profession as a teacher in mainstream in both urban and rural school communities prior to moving into a bilingual setting.
In 2006-08, she joined a Māori education provider where she coordinated and facilitated the He Ara Tika Māori tuakana teina mentoring programme in colleges within her region. Planning a range of educational events encouraging rangatahi to make connections, realise their aspirations and prepare for their futures were a major focus.
From 2009, Rachel taught in a rūmaki at her local school in a rural community. Over 8 years she worked alongside whānau and kaiako to provide tamariki with rich learning experiences to strengthen their identity, nurture te reo Māori me ōna tikanga reflecting the culture and aspirations of whānau, the local hapū and iwi.
After a growing interest in supporting tamariki with additional learning needs Rachel joined the RTLB service in 2016. She collaborated with a range of stakeholders to support ākonga in Māori-medium kura to explore diverse ways to create positive outcomes for learners.
Since joining CORE in 2018, Rachel has had the opportunity to create educational resources and provide facilitation to support kaiako with culturally responsive practice, mātauranga Māori, aromatawai and localising the curriculum both online and in schools across Aotearoa.

Tangata i akona ki te kāinga, tūngia ki te marae tau ana!
While a number of factors contribute to tamariki, their wellbeing and success in life I believe at the centre is the strongest influence of all, whānau. I was born and raised within a loving whānau in the Wairarapa. With the support of our villages, together my husband and I have raised six tamariki and so far we have two precious mokopuna. I have taught in Hauraki, Waikato and for the last 15 years in Tauranga Moana where my whānau and I have established and live on our papakāinga. I enjoy going to the beach, dancing, learning and engaging with people from all walks of life. I am inspired by many who love learning and share their kete of knowledge and expertise empowering others.
